Published: October 24th, 2017 by HarperTeen

Source: Hardcover, 389 pages.

Summary: On Christmas Eve five years ago, Holly was visited by three ghosts who showed her how selfish and spoiled she’d become. They tried to convince her to mend her ways.

She didn’t.

And then she died.

Now she’s stuck working for the top-secret company Project Scrooge–as the latest Ghost of Christmas Past.

Every year, they save another miserly grouch. Every year, Holly stays frozen at seventeen while her family and friends go on living without her. So far, Holly’s afterlife has been miserable.

But this year, everything is about to change. . . .

Rating: I gave this 5/5 stars on Goodreads!

Thoughts: You guys. I know you probably do not want to pick up a Christmas book right now, but YOU HAVE TO. If you don’t right now, PLEASE add it to your TBR for Christmas 2018. I swear, this was so good!

We have seen retellings of The Christmas Carol over and over again, but this one is just different. I loved the concept. We had a 17 year old girl who is truly just terrible. She goes through the typical “visited by 3 ghosts who try to change her ways, but she refuses, so she dies” (Not a spoiler) storyline, BUT in this one, she actually is then forced to work as the Ghost of Christmas Past, which she describes as “her own personal hell”. The company she works for, Project Scrooge, is a company that takes a “Scrooge” every year, and tries to change their ways and therefore make the world a better place. It was such a different take on the original tale, and I just loved it!

Our main character, Holly, was, as I said, truly horrible. She was so selfish, cruel, and self-centered. She was the epitome of a typical “Scrooge”. She hated Christmas solely because her birthday was December 26th, and Christmas took away the attention from her. *wow*. Regardless of how unlikeable she was, I loved her! She was sarcastic, and you couldn’t help but want the best for her. I giggled when things went wrong for her, but then felt bad because I did really want her to realize how awful she was being and become the better person that everyone around her knew she could be. She was a great main character. Then, we have Ethan, our other main character. The “Scrooge” of this year. He was also super unlikeable. Yet, he was also SO likeable. He was definitely a different kind of “Scrooge”, and it was really fun watching the story develop around him.

The plot of this story completely grabbed my attention. Yesterday, I was on page like 20. So, there’s that. I could not put this story down. It was just so unique. It was sad. It was funny. It was happy. It was all the things I needed to start off this year of reading! I literally was upset when the book ended. The ending was phenomenal. I was upset because it was over. I loved this so much.

Although the ending did not end the way I thought it would, it ended perfectly, and exactly the way it needed to end. My heart wanted something different for the fate of both of our main characters, but I’m still satisfied with the ending.

The writing was fun. It was satire at times. It was heart wrenching at times. It was hilarious at times! There was such a good mix of feelings that made this book just feel so well-rounded. Ugh, I loved it. This was my first book I have read from Cynthia Hand, but I am definitely interested in reading anything else she has out now and in the future!

I see this being a definite re-read in a coming holiday season! Seriously, it was just so fun, and such a refreshing take on a retelling of a loved classic. Please, do yourself a favor and pick this one up! Just pure enjoyment.

Have you read it?! What are your thoughts?

Thanks for reading! (:
